Auburn student creates for Dadeville’s yarn shop

Aug 16, 2023Aug 16, 2023

Abigail Murphy / The Record Abby Ledbetter first started crochet work when she was 8 years old. With 11 years of crochet experience, she sells some of her pieces at The Yarn Shop Around the Corner in Dadeville.

Walking into The Yarn Shop Around the Corner, you may notice several completed crochet pieces. The hands behind some of these pieces is Abby Ledbetter.

Ledbetter started crocheting when she was eight years old. Now a rising sophomore at Auburn University, she continues to crochet in between classes, her duties with the Tiger Eyes flagline and the women’s choir.

Ledbetter first came across the yarn shop through a Facebook group and now has become a regular. Some of her favorite things to crochet are stuffed animals — one most notable is a toddler-sized stuffed unicorn. She also makes bobble stitch baskets and, in the yarn shop, she has a blanket with crocheted 3-D flowers.

Submitted / The Record One of Ledbetter's biggest stuffed animals are her unicorns. She said bigger projects like this can take her up to 20 hours to make.

“Currently I want to broaden my horizons,” she said. “I have just gotten into Tunisian crochet, which is kind of like knitting and crochet combined into one.”

Ledbetter is also working on making crochet goods for a craft fair in Notasulga. Some of her bigger projects, like the blankets and large stuffed animals, can take up to 20 hours to create.

She said with the profit she earns most of it goes back into buying more yarn. Her mother, Kori Ledbetter, added Abby’s room is lined with yarn.

“Her room is just a craft room,” Kori said. “Then she has a separate craft room with her room. Yarn everywhere.”

Kori said her daughter’s crafting abilities are credited to Abby’s great grandmother, who first taught her how to crochet. However, Abby’s crochet pieces are spread across their family.

For Christmas, she made her grandfather, who lives in the veteran’s home in Alexander City, a crochet blanket. She said her grandfather is over six feet, so the blanket took quite a while. Although she is currently working on another blanket for him that’s more fitting for the summer weather.

Submitted / The Record Abby Ledbetter said her favorite thing to crochet is stuffed animals. Some of her pieces can be found at The Yarn Shop Around the Corner.

At Auburn, Ledbetter is studying English education. She said multiple English teachers inspired her to take this career path. Once she is completed with her bachelor’s degree, she will be pursuing a master’s as well for administrative work.

While Ledbetter was born in Notasulga and primarily grew up in Auburn, she has her heart set on teaching at Dadeville schools. Ideally, she hopes to teach both English and coach color guard.
